Sad news - we have all lost a friend
Dr. Nathan Friedman, a mentor and overall generous spirit, has passed away. He died at the age of 97 on May 27, 2009 in Beverly Hills, CA. His daughter, Susan Friedman, called to let me know of his death and I feel great sadness knowing he's no longer with us. He was a periodontist who had great depth of knowledge and interest in psychology. A man who was way ahead of his time, in the 1960's he founded the Department of Behavioral Science at USC School of Dentistry. "Nate" was one of the most remarkable people I've ever known and I feel fortunate to have had him as a mentor and friend., He shared so much with his students and his patients and he was a pioneer in research on helping fearful patients. He has had a very significant impact on me and my work with the profession of dentistry.
I'd encouraged him for a long time to write a book, but he said it was really not a goal for him. He did, however, want to share his work with others ... to benefit doctors and their patients.. Therefore, he generously gave me permission to transcribe his seminal paper, "The Iatrosedative Process" and to make it available on my website. I appreciate his generosity and hope that his work will continure to help doctors treat fearful patients. The paper may be accessed here.- scroll to the bottom of the page to find access to the 4 pages.
Dr. Friedman's life and work cannot be summed up in text. More than anything, I think of him as a brilliant mind and a gentle, caring soul. I love him and will miss him.
